Temporal course of implicit emotion regulation during a Priming-Identify task: an ERP study

چکیده
Implicit emotion regulation defined as goal-driven processes modulates emotion experiences and responses automatically without awareness. However, the temporal course of implicit emotion regulation is not clear. To address these issues, we adopted a new Priming-identify task (PI task) to manipulate implicit emotion regulation directly and observed the changes of early (N170), middle (early posterior negativity, EPN), and late event-related potentials (ERPs) components (late positivity potentials, LPP) under the different implicit emotion regulation conditions. The behavioral results indicated that the PI task manipulated subjective emotion experience effectively by priming emotion regulation goals. The ERP results found that implicit emotion regulation induced more negative N170 without altering the EPN and the LPP amplitudes, indicating that implicit emotion regulation occured automatically in the early perceptual stage not in the late selective attention stage of emotion processing. The correlation analysis also found the enlarged N170 was associated with decreased negative emotion subjective rating, suggesting that the N170 was probably an effective index of implicit emotion regulation. These observations imply that implicit emotion regulation probabbly occurs in the early stage of emotion processing automatically without consciousness.

Event-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...
متن کاملThe time course of repetition effects for familiar faces and objects: an ERP study.
Face and object priming has been extensively studied, but less is known about the repetition processes which are specific to each material and those which are common to both types of material. In order to track the time course of these repetition processes, EEG was recorded while 12 healthy young subjects performed a long-term perceptual repetition priming task using faces and object drawings. ...
متن کاملNeurophysiological and Behavior Responses in Emotion Regulation
Emotion regulation is the ability to modify the intensity and time course of emotional experiences and expressions to manage arousal, such as negative and positive responses. Emotion regulation is crucial for the development of adaptive social functioning. Few studies have a measurement method for identifying neural markers to examine the correlation between neural and behavior response of emot...
متن کاملDirect and Indirect Timing Functions in Unilateral Hemispheric Lesions
Introduction: The neural substrates of temporal processing are not still fully known. The majority of interval timing studies have dealt with this subject in the context of “Explicit timing” (computing the time intervals explicitly). The hypothesis “Implicit timing” (implicitly using temporal processing to improve function) has also proposed. This lesion study addressed explicit and implicit ti...
متن کاملIndividual Differences in Automatic Emotion Regulation Interact with Primed Emotion Regulation during an Anger Provocation
The current study investigated the interactive effects of individual differences in automatic emotion regulation (AER) and primed emotion regulation strategy on skin conductance level (SCL) and heart rate during provoked anger. The study was a 2 × 2 [AER tendency (expression vs. control) × priming (expression vs. control)] between subject design. Participants were assigned to two groups accordi...
